Zoology is an industry that, often rightly so, has come under a lot of criticism, but it must be said that there is a lot to be gained through these institutions when at the standard required - sometimes through public awareness and education programs, and at other times through captive breeding to ensure the survival of a specific species. In a lot of ways, Zoology as a field has developed immensely, but there are very few in the industry who wouldn't agree that there is still a long way to go.
In our efforts to educate the public on animal conservation issues and the importance of each individual species, Conjour will also aim to highlight some specific organisations (such as registered Zoological parks) who are going beyond the traditional idea of zoos as entertainment facilities, and working to progress the plight of endangered species and public awareness. Conjour is not officially affiliated with any of these groups, and we encourage our readers to complete their own research when it comes to the work these organisations do, and hold all organisations working in the animal welfare industry to high standards.
The role of zoos can and should be an important one, but there is a long way to go to see this standard met across the board.
